Orbit Fitting and Uncertainties for Kuiper Belt Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a procedure for determination of positions and orbital elements, and associated uncertainties, of outer Solar System planets. The orbit-fitting procedure is greatly streamlined compared to traditional methods because acceleration can be treated as a perturbation to the inertial motion of the body. These techniques are immediately applicable to Kuiper Belt Objects, for which recovery observations are costly. Our methods produce positional estimates and uncertainty ellipses even in the face of the substantial degeneracies of short-arc orbit fits; the sole a priori assumption is that the orbit should be bound or nearly so. We use these orbit-fitting techniques to derive a strategy for determining Kuiper Belt orbits with a minimal number of observations. Subject headings: Kuiper Belt—celestial mechanics

The Small Numbers of Large Kuiper Belt Objects
We explore the brightness distribution of the largest and brightest (m(R)<22) Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). We construct a luminosity function of the dynamically excited or hot Kuiper belt (orbits with inclinations > 5) from the very brightest to m(R)=23. We find for m(R). 23, a single slope appears to describe the luminosity function. We estimate ∼12 KBOs brighter than m(R)∼19.5 are present in t...
متن کاملOrigins of Solar System Dust Beyond Jupiter
The measurements of cosmic interplanetary dust by the instruments on board the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft contain the dynamical signature of dust generated by Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt objects, as well as short period Oort Cloud comets and short period Jupiter family comets. While the dust concentration detected between Jupiter and Saturn is mainly due to the cometary components, the dust outside...
متن کاملDisk as the source of the Jupiter Family comets
The short period Jupiter family comets (JFCs) are thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt; specifically a dynamical subclass of the Kuiper Belt known as the 'scattered disk' is argued to be the dominant source of JFCs. However, the best estimates from observational surveys indicate that this source falls short by about three orders of magnitude the estimates obtained from theoretical models of ...
متن کاملThe Impact of a Close Stellar Encounter on the Edgeworth-kuiper Belt
We numerically investigate the possibility that a close stellar encounter could account for the high inclinations of the Kuiper belt, as originally proposed by Ida, Larwood and Burkert, however we consider encounters with pericenters within those explored by previous works. A star of mass 0.2M⊙ entering the solar system on a nearly parabolic, low inclination, retrograde orbit with perihelion of...
متن کاملObservational Limits on a Distant Cold Kuiper Belt
Almost all of the > 600 known Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) have been discovered within 50 AU of the Sun. One possible explanation for the observed lack of KBOs beyond 50 AU is that the distant Kuiper belt is dynamically very cold, and thus thin enough on the sky to have slipped between previous deep survey fields. We have completed a survey designed to search for a dynamically cold distant Kuiper...
